Volume and value of retail sales up

The volume of retail sales, excluding price effects, increased by 4.6% in May 2005 compared to May 2004. The value of retail sales increased by 6% in the same period.

There was a monthly decrease of 0.7%.

The three-month February 2005 – April 2005 volume figures show that, compared with the three months ending January 2005:

- The largest increase in the volume of sales was in the clothing sector, which rose by +8.3%.

- The largest decrease in the volume of sales was in the department stores sector, which fell -4.5%.
