McDowell praises bravery of gardaí after Dublin stabbing

14/07/2005 - 13:10:35
The Minister for Justice, Michael McDowell, has praised the bravery of the two gardaí who were stabbed while responding to reports of a robbery in north Dublin last night.

One of the officers is being treated in intensive care after being critically injured in the knife attack in Raheny, while his colleague was also hospitalised with serious, but less severe, stab wounds.

Two Chinese men have been arrested in connection with the attack.

Asked about the matter during an engagement in Dublin today, Mr McDowell said he would consider introducing protective vests for gardaí.

He also paid tribute to the two victims, saying: "I want to remind people that, while the gardaí take a lot of stick for some things that go wrong, there are many occasions when they show bravery which none of their critics would show for an instant."
