CSO reports 3% increase in official suicide figures

14/07/2005 - 07:58:51
The number of deaths formally recorded as suicides in Ireland increased by 3% last year, according to new figures from the Central Statistics Office.

The CSO said 457 suicides were recorded in 2004, most of them among people between the ages of 15 and 44.

Many people working in the area believe that these official figures are an underestimation of the real suicide rate as some deliberate deaths are recorded as accidental.

Meanwhile, the CSO figures also show that one-third of births in Ireland now take place outside marriage, compared to 22% 10 years ago.
