HRC criticises male-oriented language in Constitution

The Human Rights Commission has added its voice to calls for the Irish Constitution to be made more gender-balanced.

The call comes as the Irish Government prepares to appear before a UN committee on the elimination of discrimination against women in New York today.

In a statement issued to coincide with the appearance, the Human Rights Commission said the language of the current Constitution was too male-oriented and failed to address equality between the sexes.

It also said the document had an "unacceptable" view of women as housewives and mothers and this was contributing to Ireland's lack of progress in eliminating gender discrimination.
