US soldier dies in Iraq mine blast
12/07/2005 - 08:12:13A US soldier has died of injuries he sustained when his patrol struck a land mine south of Baghdad, the US military said today.
The explosion occurred at around 9am (6am Irish Time) yesterday, the military said in a statement.
Three other soldiers were wounded in the attack near Mahmoudiya, which is about 20 miles south of Baghdad.
The military had initially reported that the incident was west of Baghdad.
The identity of the soldier, who was attached to Task Force Baghdad, was withheld pending notification of relatives.
At least 1,756 members of the US military have died since the beginning of the Iraq war in March 2003.
At least 1,352 died as a result of hostile action.
The figures include five military civilians.
