ICTU launches guide on rights of foreign domestic workers

12/07/2005 - 11:28:34
The Irish Congress of Trade Unions has published a new guide on the rights of foreign domestic workers employed in Irish households.

The hiring of domestic workers has become increasingly popular with affluent Irish families in recent years.

The ICTU guide was launched today in response to anecdotal evidence that such workers are often exploited by their employers.

ICTU has been calling for greater legal protection and, speaking at today's launch, Junior Minister Tony Killeen insisted that the Government was taking action.

He said the number of labour inspectors in the country was currently being increased from 17 to 31 and the Government would also consider establishing a Joint Labour Committee to oversee standards in the sector if such a move was found to be necessary.
