Hoax emails seek donations for London bomb victims
11/07/2005 - 09:47:46The Australian Red Cross today warned of hoax emails purporting to seek funds for victims of the terror bombings in London last week.
The charity’s chief executive, Robert Tickner, said a small number of people in Australia had contacted the Australian Red Cross saying they had received emails seeking donations on behalf of the British Red Cross.
“It is a pretty despicable thing to do,” Tickner said.
He said if people wanted to make a donation to the British Red Cross, they could do so safely via the charity’s website.
Tickner said the Australian charity had informed police of the hoax, but didn’t know where it had originated.
Four bombs exploded in London on Thursday killing at least 49 people and injuring 700, 60 of whom remain in hospitals today.
