Canavan in fitness race for replay

11/07/2005 - 10:04:40
It's been set. The Ulster football final replay will take place on Saturday, July 23 at Croke Park (throw-in 4.30pm), but both Tyrone and holders Armagh may be without some key individuals for the return south.

Tyrone forward Peter Canavan, who scooped the Vodafone GAA Player of the month award for June today, suffered a shoulder/rib injury in yesterday's drawn game at headquarters.

Red Hands boss Mickey Harte has admitted that the 34-year-old marksman, who was held scoreless by the Armagh rearguard and replaced at half-time, is facing "a race against time" to be fit for Saturday week.

Harte confirmed: "Peter had a rib and shoulder injury coming into the game and he thought he would be able to play on with it. By half-time he knew he couldn't. It's a race against time now for the replay. It's in the hands of the Gods."

Meanwhile, Armagh, who stunningly fought back to level-pegging with a Steven McDonnell goal and last-gasp point from Paul McGrane, have injury doubts over midfielder John Toal and wing-back Aidan O'Rourke.

Toal was brought to Newry's Daisy Hill Hospital for an immediate scan on a strain in his right knee, while O'Rourke played out the 70-plus minutes with a suspected broken hand.

Further details on the extent of their injuries are expected to emerge in the coming days.

Yesterday's Anglo-Celt Cup decider saw 60,186 northern supporters converge on Croke Park, and the GAA will be hoping for a similar attendance on Saturday week - just 24 hours before the throw-ins of the first two All-Ireland hurling quarter-finals.
