Carroll ready to go the distance at Helsinki
Irish number one Mark Carroll plans to compete in the 10,000 metres in the upcoming World Championships despite destroying the best of British over half that distance at the AAAs of England in Manchester on Saturday.
Carroll defied the blistering heat on the opening day of the Norwich Union World Trials to win in 13 minutes 48.90 seconds but insists his focus is on achieving the necessary mark at the longer distance to earn the right to compete in Helsinki.
“I want to do the 10,000m and I am aiming for the qualifier in New York next weekend,” said Carroll, who competed in Manchester as a guest.
He added: “I had a horrendous 3,000m race in Cork last Saturday in really bad weather, so I knew it was essential I stretched my legs again and got a race under my belt.
“I’m pleased with my showing today and shaking away the rust and now hopefully it showed I am in shape for a fast 10,000m next week.”
His season’s best performance today left Mark Miles in his shadows. 33-year-old Carroll pulled away with two laps remaining for an easy victory over his English rival, who clocked 13.58.18secs.
