Number of BSE cases down sharply
08/07/2005 - 11:37:59The number of BSE cases being detected in Ireland has halved so far this year, according to new figures from the Department of Agriculture.
The department said just one case of the disease was detected in a nine-year-old dairy cow in Co Cork in the past week.
This brought the total number of cases for the year so far to 38, compared to 73 in the same period last year and 110 in the first half of 2003.
The department said the underlying trend indicated that controls introduced in 1996 and 1997 to tackle BSE were proving effective.
