Ahern: 'Gardaí taking Islamic militant threat seriously'

The Taoiseach Bertie Ahern has insisted the Irish authorities are taking the threat posed by Islamic extremists seriously.

Mr Ahern was questioned about the matter by reporters in Dublin this morning following yesterday's devastating bomb attacks in London.

He said the Gardaí were watching a number of suspected militants with alleged links to Osama bin Laden's al-Qaida network who have been living in Ireland for some time.

"The Gardaí work very, very closely with international security and we do watch certain individuals very, very closely," he said.

"There are people living in the Republic of Ireland that we have to attach huge importance to."
