London hospitals still on major alert

07/07/2005 - 15:04:30
Scores of casualties flooded hospitals today following the London bomb attacks.

All the city’s hospitals were on a major incident alert and some of the injured were ferried to accident and emergency departments on double-decker buses.

Two deaths have been confirmed at Aldgate, but eyewitnesses reported seeing more bodies in the wreckage at some blast sites.

Alastair Wilson, clinical director at the Royal London Hospital, near Liverpool Street Station, said it had received 183 patients from two of the incidents.

Eight were critically injured, including one brought in with cardiac arrest. Six people were being operated on.

Some 123 patients had already been discharged.

Victims suffered blast injuries, injuries to their limbs and smoke inhalation.

Mr Wilson said he expected there to be fatalities at the scene, but there had been none at the hospital.

The Royal London said staff responded immediately when informed of the major incident.

The Helicopter Emergency Medical Service was despatched along with mobile medical response teams.

“They were able to start treating patients at the scene, stabilising their condition before they were moved to our accident and emergency department,” said a spokeswoman.
