Wie well positioned to make cut
07/07/2005 - 20:58:23Teenager Michelle Wie’s bid to become the first woman to make the cut on a men’s PGA Tour in 60 years began with an encouraging opening round at the John Deere Classic in Silvis, Illinois.
The Hawaiian 15-year-old carded a one-under score of 71 – five shots off the early pace set by Canadian Glen Hnaituk and the USA’s Craig Bowdon.
Wie, who is pitting herself against the men for the third time in her short career, had a shaky front nine as she went to the turn in a one-over-par 36.
A birdie at the second was followed by three bogeys in four holes but she stopped the rot by picking up a shot at the short seventh.
A bogey and a birdie completed the front nine but birdies at the par-four 11th and the 557-yard 17th brought her back into red figures.
