Mayo make three changes

07/07/2005 - 14:45:54
Mayo's John Maughan has made three changes to his side as he seeks a sixth provincial title as a manager in Sunday's Connacht SFC final.

Keith Higgins' dislocated elbow has been the main concern for the holders, and former Clare supremo Maughan has selected Dermot Geraghty in Higgins' corner back berth.

Also in defence, Peadar Gariner returns from time out with a ligament injury to over from Gary Mullins in the half-back line.

Trevor Mortimer, meanwhile, has banked a corner forward role, following his impressive two-point semi-final salvo as a substitute - displacing Stephen Carolan.

Mayo fans will look again to young full-forward Billy Joe Padden, son the 1980s Connacht legend Willie Joe.

The Belmullet marksman hit three points from play when making his championship debut in the semi defeat of Roscommon, while Conor Mortimer, brother of Trevor, will be expected to lead the scoring stakes against a young Galway defence - having struck a tidy 1-5 last time out.

MAYO (SFC v Galway): D Clarke; D Geraghty, D Heaney, G Ruane; C Moran, J Nallen, P Gardiner; R McGarrity, S Fitzmaurice; A Moran, C McDonald (capt), A Dillon; C Mortimer, BJ Padden, T Mortimer.
