Els getting to grips with driver

07/07/2005 - 15:36:06
Ernie Els today took charge of the driver which he hopes can take him to a second Open title next week.

A one-under-par 70 in the first round of the Scottish Open was nothing special, but the world number three expects his new club to be much more effective at St Andrews than at Loch Lomond.

“It wasn’t going that far today because the ball doesn’t roll,” he said. “But it will next week, for sure.

“It’s the biggest head you can get and it’s coming out low and fast. It’s going to go good next week.”

Els, winner of the Open three years ago and loser of a play-off to Todd Hamilton 12 months ago, made a late decision to play the warm-up event after disappointing performances at the Masters and US Open.

“It’s such an easy week, staying on site and relaxing. I am happy to play here and work on my game,” he said. “I didn’t think I was going to come, but on Tuesday I felt my game was coming.”
