Chemicals spill at marina
Three men required treatment and a block of flats was evacuated today following a chemical incident at a marina.
The alarm was raised after a container of agrochemicals split and spilled in a garage at Swift’s Key, Carrickfergus, Co Antrim, around 4.30pm.
Firefighters wearing protective chemical clothing decontaminated the three casualties, who were suffering from breathing difficulties, before they were treated by ambulance staff.
The spillage was successfully contained in the garage but specialist teams are still ventilating the flats above it.
It is hoped residents will be able to return to their homes later tonight.
A fire brigade spokesman said: “The men who required treatment had a lucky escape.
“Firefighters were able to take action to prevent the contamination having an adverse effect on the environment.”
