Edredon decision soon - Lewis

01/07/2005 - 15:31:32
A decision on whether to retire veteran chaser Edredon Bleu is likely next week after talks between owner Jim Lewis and trainer Henrietta Knight.

The 13-year-old has won 21 of 46 starts including the Queen Mother Champion Chase, the King George VI Chase and the Peterborough Chase four times.

“I think he’s unlikely to run again – he’s been a great servant,” Lewis told At The Races.

“We’ve had him since he was four years old and he’s got a virtual 50% strike rate. It is remarkable for a horse, a French horse particularly, to last so long, as reputedly they don’t last. They’ve done a great job.

“He owes me nothing. He’s got nothing to prove and I don’t want to see him just trotting round like a has-been.

“We’ll be glad to retire him eventually. We are talking to Henrietta next week. We have a superb home proposed for him and he’ll get everything a good horse deserves.

“We love him to death and he’s given us some great thrills over the years. I’m sure we’ll play the videos every time we need cheering up.”

Lewis revealed that his wife Val is currently battling against cancer.

“I would like to say to everyone in racing who has been so good and so supportive – it does make a big difference,” he added.
