Senior Orangeman ‘met leading republican in Belfast’

A senior Orangeman in Belfast reportedly took part in discussions in recent weeks with a leading republican.

Reports last night said William Mawhinney, the Orange Order's west Belfast district master, and republican Sean Murray were both involved in the talks leading up to last Saturday's Whiterock parade.

The talks failed to produce an agreement and the Orangemen decided to postpone the march rather than take a new route recommended by the Parades Commission.

The meeting between Mr Mawhinney and Mr Murray happened despite the Orange Order's refusal to speak to republicans or residents of nationalist areas opposed to their parades.
