Hanafin considering two-stage Leaving Cert exams

01/07/2005 - 09:05:22
Education Minister Mary Hanafin is reportedly considering Leaving Cert reforms that would see students sitting earlier exams as well as those that take place in June.

Reports this morning said this earlier exam would take place at some stage during the final school year and would account for 25% of the total marks in each subject.

The reforms could see, for example, the essay and comprehension sections of Irish, English and other language papers being held earlier in the year.

This morning's reports said the minister had suggested such a system in response to a recommendation from the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment aimed at reducing the stress of the Leaving Cert.

The NCCA had proposed major reforms that would have seen a series of exams taking place over a two to three-year period, but Ms Hanafin reportedly believes this would be over-ambitious and too costly.
