Dáil begins annual three-month summer break

The Dáil is due to begin its annual three-month summer break today, with TDs not due back in the House until the end of September.

Opposition parties have criticised the Government for not postponing the start of the recess to allow for more debate on important legislation.

They wanted the Fianna Fáil-Progressive Democrats coalition to allow at least an extra week to discuss a raft of amendments to the controversial Garda Bill.

However, the two ruling parties rejected the request and rushed the legislation through the House this week ahead of the summer holidays.
