Inspector of Prisons recommends privatisation of Irish jails

The Inspector of Prisons has recommended that Irish jails be privatised in an effort to make them more efficient and cost-effective.

In his latest annual report, Justice Dermot Kinlen said privatisation should first be introduced on a trial basis and, if successful, should be adopted throughout the prison service.

The proposal is particularly controversial as the privatisation of detention facilities in many countries, particularly the United States, has led to a significant drop in prison standards.
