Minister hails Cork IDA team

30/06/2005 - 15:46:12
Minister for Trade Enterprise and Employment Micheál Martin has praised the IDA for what it has done to attract new foreign direct investment into Cork over the past year.

He was commenting on the publication of the authority’s annual report which showed that the Cork team, based at IDA house in Bishopstown, had been very successful in selling Cork as a prime location to invest.

He said the authority was responding to the need to secure firms which were interested in locating strategic business functions in the region.

This focus on securing this type of activity in the region was the way forward.

The way forward for this country was as the IDA was doing, selling Cork as a place with a great infrastructure and high quality graduates who had the brain power to help firms be hugely successful in a whole range of areas including the information technological and pharmaceutical sectors.

Deputy Martin praised the Cork office under the leadership of Brian Conroy, Area Director South and Conor Healy, manager South West Region for their success in attracting new firms to the region.

The minister also praised IDA chief executive Sean Dorgan, a native of Cork, for the support of the IDA nationally from the Cork Kerry region.

The minister welcomed the decision of the following companies to either locate in or expand their operations in Cork during the last year:

Siemens Business Services Ltd.
Ellison, Cascade Designs Inc..
Engenio Information Technologies Inc.
Alcon Inc.

All have placed strategic business functions such as research and development, European headquarters and supply chain management in Cork, creating over 345 new jobs.
