Lewis calls time on career
Olympic gold medallist Denise Lewis has quit athletics.
Lewis had planned to compete as a heptathlete twice more, at the World Championships in August and the Commonwealth Games in March.
But the 32-year-old has been plagued by injury problems since her Olympic glory in Sydney in 2000.
“My body has had enough. It has been taken through the mill,” said Lewis.
“To let go it has to be right and you have to feel you are not going to be haunted in years to come. I am in a place where I feel good about it.
“There is something that happens to you, a calmness that takes place when you know you are ready to retire. There is not that anxious feeling and the sleepless nights.
“I don’t come to major decisions quickly, especially when they are life-changing. I have thought it through and I am clear.
“I am sitting here and I am happy. I am thinking about my future and it is a future that does not include participating in athletics.”
