'Flying doc' urged for island services
A "flying doctor" helicopter service is needed for Ireland’s remote islands, the Dáil heard today.
Mayo TD Dr Jerry Cowley said islanders would feel more secure if such dedicated medical services were available.
The GP, who worked on Inishbiggle, Clare Island and Inishturk as a doctor, told Rural Affairs Minister Eamon Ó Cuiv people on Inishbiggle in particular often felt isolated in bad weather.
Mr Cowley said: “Tragedies have occurred on the island because there was delay in getting the medical treatment that helicopter services would bring to the island.
“It would be a great comfort to older people on this island and other islands,” he said.
Mr Ó Cuiv pointed out that Inisbiggle had one of the best helipads in the country and was well served by the Coastguard and Air Corps helicopters in emergencies.
“I fully recognise that helicopter evacuation in terms of illness or emergencies is vital,” he said, but pointed out that the issue was not often raised with him by islanders.
The residents of Inishbiggle, which has a population of 39, have run a campaign for several years for a cable car service for the island.
The Irish-speaking island is one of the most remote in the country.
