The debut feature of an Irish filmmaker has been selected for the Toronto International Film Festival which takes place in September.

Perry Ogden's Pavee Lackeen has been selected as one of six films to screen in the prestigious Discovery section of the festival.

Launched in 1996, Discovery points both public audiences and industry professionals toward hot new directors.

Pavee Lackeen, charting the story of a Traveller girl, is acclaimed photographer Perry Ogden's first feature film.

The film was financed by Perry Ogden with co-finance from the Irish Film Board.

Filmed with a cast of mostly non-professionals, the film uses Travellers depicting lives near to their own.

Director Perry Ogden said he was delight with the announcement. "I really am excited to see how an international audience will react to the film and to be included in the Discovery selection is a thrill," he said.

The film gets its Irish premiere at the Galway Film Fleadh on July 8.
