29/06/2005 - 19:38:08
Tesco's hold on the UK supermarket sector hit new heights today when figures showed its market share broke through the 30% mark for the first time.

The supermarket giant held a record 30.3% share of the UK grocery market in the 12 weeks to June 19, according to market research group TNS Superpanel.

It followed a year in which the group became the first UK retailer to post annual profits of £2bn (€3bn).

Today's figures also showed the group's closest rival Asda virtually unchanged on last year with 16.4% of the market.

It was followed by Sainsbury's, rising to 15.9% from 15.6% a year ago.
