Glentoran happy with UEFA date
Glentoran will tell UEFA they intend to take on Shelbourne in their Champions League qualifying tie at the Oval on Wednesday, July 13 with a 7pm kick-off.
Shelbourne officials have expressed some discomfort at the tie taking place just the day after the Protestant marching season reaches its end but after consultation with local police, their Glentoran counterparts are confident the tie will pass off without incident.
“July 13 is actually a quiet day,” said Glens secretary Alex McWilliams.
“We discussed the possibility of an afternoon kick-off but the police were happy for the tie to be played in the evening.”
Glens still hope to secure some extra revenue through live TV coverage but are anticipating a 3,000-plus crowd for the game, with the winners due to take on 1986 European Cup winners Steaua Bucharest in the second round.
