Paisley: IRA 'must walk the walk'

27/06/2005 - 19:21:49
Ian Paisley has said that an IRA statement will not be enough to convince unionists to share power with republicans.

Earlier today Bertie Ahern and Tony Blair said that the IRA needed to produce a credible public statement which would definitely end all criminal and paramilitary activity.

But the DUP leader said: "It is not talk that is needed from the IRA. It is time to walk the walk."

The DUP which is now Northern Ireland's largest party says it will not share power with republicans until they are sure the IRA has ended all activity.

Dr Paisley told reporters this evening: "Spin from the Northern Ireland Office or the Prime Minister is only a fig leaf which covers over the nakedness of IRA depravity.

"In no way are the unionist people going to settle for anything that bears the trademarks of IRA duplicity."
