Hill injury is career-threatening - Woodward

26/06/2005 - 13:58:53
Lions coach Sir Clive Woodward has revealed the knee injury flanker Richard Hill picked up during yesterday’s first Test defeat in New Zealand is career-threatening.

The 32-year-old Saracens forward limped off 18 minutes into the 21-3 defeat in Christchurch and was taken to the dressing room on a stretcher.

Tests later revealed he had ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament and that has not only ended his tour but left his career in the balance.

The extent of the injury, which came after captain Brian O’Driscoll had departed with a dislocated left shoulder, was confirmed by Woodward on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Sportsweek programme.

“We lost Brian after 40 seconds, we lost Richard Hill – his is also a very, very serious injury. He has ruptured his acl ligament – that is a career threatening injury – and we lost Tom Shanklin in training in the morning, so it was a bad day in many, many ways,” he said.
