Man dies after car collides with bus
One man died tonight following a horrific collision between a bus and a car on the main road from Dublin to Wexford.
The man died after his car went underneath the Bus Eireann vehicle on the N11, at Scarnagh, Arklow in Co Wicklow.
Gardai said six of the people on the bus were taken to Wexford General Hospital with minor injuries following the crash.
“They were taken with minor injuries and the remaining passengers were picked up by another bus,” Erica Rosengrave, a spokeswoman for the State-sponsored transport operator, said.
Bus Eireann said there were around 20 passengers on the bus, which was equipped with seatbelts, and en route from Dublin to Rosslare at the time.
“The coach was on the N11 just south of the Arklow by-pass, when a car travelling in the opposite direction veered out of a line of traffic in what appeared to be an overtaking movement and it struck the coach in a head on collision and went under it,” Ms Rosengrave said.
The accident happened at around 5pm and emergency services – including gardai, ambulances and fire brigades – from south Wicklow and north Wexford were alerted.
Gardaí said a crane was brought to the scene the remove the bus off the car.
The accident happened just over a month after five girls were killed in a horrific crash on their way home from school near Navan, Co Meath. They died after the bus overturned on a country road.
In a separate incident, a 42-year-old motorcyclist died following a collision with a car.
The accident occurred at Rathattin, Hollywood, Co Wicklow at around 12.40pm.
A 19-year-old woman also lost her life in a crash at Glenties in Co Donegal in the early hours of the morning.
The woman, who was a rear seat passenger in the car which went out of control, was named as Caroline McGlanaghy of Drumrooske Estate in Donegal town.
Three other occupants of the car were taken to Letterkenny General Hospital, with injuries not believed to be life-threatening.
