One in 11 buy a Focus in Ireland
Figures released by the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) show car sales rose by 14.2% in May over the same period last year — the fifth month in a row that registrations have risen.
The best-selling car was again the Ford Focus, which with 1,589 units alone, claimed a spectacular 9% of the market.
Total cars sales increased from 15,414 in May 2004 to 17,601 last month, bringing sales for the year to 122,829 — a 13.5% increase on the same period last year.
“The near double-digit share for the Ford Focus is a ringing endorsement of a car that has been the best-seller in the land over the past six years,” said Eddie Murphy, chairman and managing director of Ford Ireland.
“This is the nameplate’s best-ever share performance and must be close to an industry record in recent times. That one in every 11 car-buyers last month opted for this model shows just how the public are embracing the new Focus.
“The continued strength of the market would suggest a full-year total of 175,000 cars,” he added.
