O'Brien to retire at end of season

23/06/2005 - 12:21:57
Longford Town goalkeeper Stephen O’Brien has confirmed he will retire at the end of the season.

O’Brien, 34, has spent eight years at Flancare Park helping the club win promotion and win two FAI Cup titles but has decided that this will be his last as he looks to concentrate on his business interests.

“The time is right to leave. I wanted to be fair to (Manager) Alan Mathews and give him time to get someone else in.

“That was the first thing, secondly I was conscious of the fact that I am betting on a bit and that I am probably the oldest player in the Premier Division. I feel I am playing well right now but my form was indifferent early in the year and I didn’t want to go out with people saying I was past it.”
