Coughlan to discuss sugar reforms with EU agriculture chief
23/06/2005 - 07:45:45Minister for Agriculture Mary Coughlan is expected to relay Irish concerns about planned sugar industry reforms to EU Agriculture Commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel today.
Yesterday, the European Commission proposed major cuts in sugar subsidies that could wipe out the sugar sector in Ireland.
The Irish Farmers Association said the reforms, which will be subject to negotiations among EU agriculture ministers later this year, would put thousands of Irish beet-growers out of business.
The issue is expected to dominate talks in Kildare today between Ms Coughlan and Ms Fischer Boel, who is attending a number of events related to the IFA's 50th anniversary.
