BT sets up new business unit
BT agreed to set up a new business unit for 30,000 staff today as part of moves to ensure rivals in the UK gain fair access to its network.
The creation of the independently-branded Access Services division is among recommendations from British regulator Ofcom, following a lengthy review into the position of the former monopoly operator.
Ofcom said its drive for “real equality of access” would encourage competition, as well as greater consumer choice and lower prices.
BT had faced the prospect of the possible separation of its wholesale and retail divisions, although it learned in November that this was no longer in the thinking of Ofcom.
The company came up with its own set of proposals in February, which have formed the basis of the recommendations made by Ofcom today.
The new unit will have its own headquarters and distinct brand – including uniforms and vehicles – while the 30,000 staff responsible for BT’s local access networks will be subject to different bonus schemes.
