Mauresmo destroys young Spaniard

22/06/2005 - 15:01:45
Number three seed Amelie Mauresmo produced a text-book display of grass-court tennis to dispatch Maria Sanchez Lorenzo in rapid time on Court Two.

The two-time Wimbledon semi-finalist showed just why she is going to be a major threat in this year’s competition as she breezed past her Spanish opponent 6-1 6-3 in just 46 minutes.

The 25-year-old Frenchwoman, a former world number one, broke Sanchez Lorenzo in the very first game, and never looked back as she treated the crowd to a blistering display of serve and volley tennis.

Last year, Mauresmo lost to Serena Williams in the semi-finals at the All England Club, and on this afternoon’s display, the likes of number one seed Lindsay Davenport and Belgian Kim Clijsters will be all too aware of the threat she poses in their half of the 2005 draw.
