Davenport defeats compatriot to progress

The infamous “graveyard of champions” failed to add to its list of illustrious victims at Wimbledon today, as both top seed Lindsay Davenport and world number three Amelie Mauresmo booked safe passage into the third round.

Davenport, winner here at SW19 in 1999, completed another comfortable victory, beating fellow American Jamea Jackson 6-0 6-3 out on Court Two.

The 28-year-old world number one will now face either Barbora Strycova of the Czech Republic of Russian 30th seed Dinara Safina for a place in the last 16.

Also in the third round will be Frenchwoman Mauresmo, who earlier produced a superb display of serve and volley tennis to dispatch Maria Sanchez Lorenzo.

Belgium's 2003 semi-finalist Kim Clijsters also wasted little time in disposing of Marissa Irvin on Court One.

She secured a straight-sets 6-1 6-1 win in just just 44 minutes to move into the last 32.

Elsewhere, ninth seed Anastasia Myskina also secured her place in the third round with a 6-4 6-3 win over Aiko Nakamura of Japan.

The Russian former French Open champion appeared agitated throughout the clash on Court 13 against a player ranked 94 in the world, and almost threw away a 5-1 lead before regaining her compose to secure a straight-sets victory.

Belgrade-born Jelena Jankovic, 17th seed and runner-up at the DFS Classic in Birmingham, beat Mariana Diaz Oliva of Argentina 6-3 7-5 and will meet Myskina for a place in the last 16.

Fifth-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova, from Russia, needed three sets to get past the challenge of promising Indian Sania Mirza, eventually coming through 6-4 6-7 6-4 and will play Czech Nicole Vaidisova in the third round.

Another young Russian Elena Dementieva, the sixth seed, had a tough time against Germany’s Sabine Klaschka, eventually coming through 2-6 6-3 8-6 to secure a place against American Mashona Washington in the last 32.
