Labour urges Govt to delay introduction of Garda Bill

The Labour Party has called on the Government to delay the introduction of the Garda Bill due to be debated by the Dáil over the coming two days.

Party spokesman Joe Costello said today that the legislation should be stalled to allow an independent commission to assess the findings of the Morris Tribunal.

Last night, Justice Minister Michael McDowell announced 11 proposed amendments to the Bill, but this still falls short of the tribunal's recommendation for a complete review of the proposed legislation.

Mr Costello said the late timing of the amendments meant a proper debate could not take place.
