EU sugar reform proposals expected to be published today
22/06/2005 - 08:27:34The European Commission is expected to publish its proposals for reform of the EU sugar industry today.
The reforms are designed to improve competition both from abroad and within the 25 member states and are expected to include cuts in subsidies and production levels.
The Irish Farmers Association has claimed that the measures will completely destroy the Irish sugar industry within a few years and put 3,700 beet growers out of business.
Earlier this year, Greencore closed down its sugar factory in Carlow in anticipation of the changes in EU policy.
