Magpies linked with Figo move
Reports suggest that Newcastle are leading the race to sign former World Footballer of the Year Luis Figo.
Real Madrid’s Portuguese star is understood to be available on a free transfer five years after heading for the Bernabeu from Barcelona in a then world-record £37m (€55.6m) move.
The Magpies are known to have opened talks with the 32-year-old’s representatives and, according to Sky Sports News, United manager Graeme Souness has spoken to the player.
Although Figo’s annual salary would be a huge outlay, there is clearly interest on both sides.
Figo, capped 107 times by his country, has previously stated he would relish a move to the Premiership.
He said: “I have always said that the Premier League is a competition which I would like to play in some day and that has not changed.
“The Premier League has improved a lot in the last few years and many of the best players in the world have signed with clubs in England.
“It is very different from the Spanish league, but I am sure that I will be able to adapt if someday I end up playing there.”
