Armagh and Donegal appeal red cards

21/06/2005 - 12:46:08
Armagh and Donegal are to appeal the red cards dished out to Francie Bellew and Adrian Sweeney in last Saturday's Ulster SFC quarter-final replay.

The northern rivals were both unhappy with the refereeing of Laois official Maurice Deegan in the stop-start Clones affair, in which Orchard defender Bellew and Donegal trio Sweeney, Eamonn McGee and Brian Roper were all dismissed.

The GAA's central disciplinary committee are due to convene on Wednesday to hear the cases of Bellew and Sweeney.

The decision on Bellew is the more pressing one, as Armagh manager Joe Kernan will be desperate to have the 2003 All-star back in his line-up for Sunday's Ulster semi-final with Derry.

Sweeney will face the same one-month lay-off unless he can have his red card, issued for a clash with Armagh skipper Kieran McGeeney, rescinded. Donegal are next in action on Saturday, July 2 in the second round of the All-Ireland qualifiers.

Donegal boss Brian McEniff insisted: "Adrian did nothing but to clash against an opponent in an effort to win the ball.

"If there is any justice, he will be cleared to play in the qualifier. Gaelic football is a physical game but it would appear the way the replay was refereed was very different to the drawn game which was a brilliant match with end-to-end football."

Last weekend's programme saw 17 red cards and 84 yellow cards issued by GAA referees.
