Owner slams HSE moves to close down Leas Cross home

21/06/2005 - 14:49:22
The owner of the Leas Cross nursing home in Swords, Co Dublin, has criticised plans by the Health Service Executive to shut down the facility.

The HSE took over the running of the home earlier this year, when a television documentary highlighted the neglect and mistreatment of residents by poorly trained staff.

Yesterday, the executive said it was removed public patients from the facility and was advising the relatives of private patients to make similar arrangements.

However, patients, relatives and staff are all protesting outside the home today to highlight their opposition to the move.

Speaking at the demonstration, Leas Cross owner John Ahern insisted that the TV exposé used selective footage to paint an inaccurate picture of the nursing home.

He described the HSE's actions as "disgusting" and said the executive had no consideration for residents and their families, as well as the Leas Cross workforce.
