€1.5bn is owed in refunds to taxpayers - FG
20/06/2005 - 08:11:51Up to €1.5bn is owed to Irish taxpayers who have failed to claim their entitlements in a range of areas in recent years, according to Fine Gael.
The party said figures it obtained from the Revenue Commissioners showed that €145m in refunds had been paid out to around 200,000 PAYE workers in the first four months of this year.
The Revenue predicts that this figure will have risen to around €330m by the end of the year.
The refunds are mainly due to people who have failed to claim relief in relation to medical expenses, bin charges, rent, trade union subscriptions, home help and some college fees.
Fine Gael has established a campaign to inform these people of their entitlements because, it says, the Government is making absolutely no effort to do so.
