Fathers' group calls for access rights
18/06/2005 - 14:21:27The Unmarried & Separated Fathers of Ireland group has highlighted the plight of Irish men who are denied access to their children following marital breakdown.
The group are coinciding their protest with the Father's Day weekend and are gathering signatures at Dublin's GPO this afternoon for a petition they intend to present to the Minister for Justice, Michael McDowell.
They say they want Minister McDowell to implement measures he previously promised them.
Speaking at the GPO, group secretary Eamon Quinn said it is time Irish fathers were given equal treatment in the courts following family break-ups.
“We want to highlight the dark, sad and lonely side for many fathers and their children because cards and gifts mean nothing if you can't see your child,” Mr Quinn said.
