McDowell defends Conroy

17/06/2005 - 17:10:01
The Minister for Justice is rejecting calls for the resignation of Garda Commissioner Noel Conroy.

The family of the man whose death led to the Morris Tribunal says he should stand down over his handling of the inquiry's report.

The judge leading the investigation found that gardaí investigating the death of Donegal cattle dealer Richie Barron were prejudiced and negligent and falsely accused two men of murder.

Mr Barron was killed in a suspected hit-and-run accident in 1996.

Michael McDowell insists sacking the Commissioner would achieve nothing.

"Noel Conroy is a man of consummate honesty and decency and he was appointed by me to be commissioner of An Garda Siochana to be a partner with me in a process of change and is fully committed to the process of change and I think that decapitating An Garda Siochana as a gesture won't do any good," he said.
