Figures highlight high detention costs
17/06/2005 - 07:18:07Figures released by the Department of Education have shown it costs up to €368,000 annually to keep a young offender in a detention school.
Reports this morning said the figures showed that it cost an average of €368,000 to keep such young people incarcerated each year. This is four times the cost of keeping an adult in prison.
The reports said the Comptroller and Auditor General had expressed concern about management in the area and the fact that financial issues remain unresolved despite being highlighted 15 years ago.
