Dáil to discuss controversial garda reform plans
17/06/2005 - 10:57:13The Dáil is due to hold a discussion today about the Government's plans for garda reform in the wake of the second report from the Morris Tribunal.
The opposition has accused the Government of ignoring one of the report's main recommendations - that the proposed Garda Bill currently making its way through to the Oireachtas be reviewed in its entirety.
The Government has insisted that the legislation will be passed without such a review. The opposition is also unhappy with the format of today's discussion as it does not allow for a debate and a vote.
Instead, TDs will only be allowed to read statements into the record.
Labour Party leader Pat Rabbitte said: "We need a proper, full-scale debate on a motion that commits the House to doing certain things arising from this report."
