Irish retail sales driven by motoring industry

Irish retail sales continue to rise, according to figures published today by the Central Statistics Office.

The figures show the volume of retail sales increased by almost 4% in the 12 months to April this year.

With inflation taken into account, the value of these sales increased by 5.3% over the same period.

The CSO said the motor trade was driving most of the increase, while department stores had actually experienced a 2% decrease in sales during the year.
