McNamara to leave Bhoys to join Wolves pack
Celtic skipper Jackie McNamara looks set to stun the club by rejecting a bumper new deal to head south.
The 31-year-old Scotland international will end his 10-year association with the Glasgow giants this week with Coca-Cola Championship club Wolves in the hunt for his signature.
Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey told the Press Association: “The deal is not done yet. We are looking at him but he is one of a number of players we are looking at. As soon as we’ve got something to say we will say it but we hope to say something in the not-too-distant future.
“We certainly have a lot of plans for this summer and we hope to say more soon.”
McNamara's departure would be a major blow to Celtic's new manager Gordon Strachan and the club.
It is believed they had offered the versatile player a substantial salary increase but McNamara claims the club only put a one-year deal on the table when he wanted double that.
McNamara, who recently enjoyed a testimonial game against the Republic of Ireland, added in the Scotsman: “I never imagined my time at Celtic would end like this. I would have preferred to have signed a new contract with the club several months ago.
“It was really disappointing that didn’t happen and disappointing that there was only a one-year deal on the table when it finally came.
“I had always hoped to finish my career with Celtic but I felt I was in a position where I had to make a choice that was the right one for my family and myself in the circumstances.”
