Search begins to find top Irish entertainer

14/06/2005 - 11:05:39
People are being asked to vote for who they think is Ireland’s greatest living entertainer as part of the ESB/Rehab People of the Year Awards, which were launched today.

Stars of light entertainment, film, drama, music, TV, radio and comedy can all be nominated for the award.

A panel made up of members of the country’s entertainment industry, including RTE’s Ryan Tubridy who launched the award today, will then pick a winner from the 15 most popular nominees.

Chris Mace of Rehab said: “Ireland has an extraordinary international reputation for the great talent across all of the many different forms of entertainment – particularly in areas such as music, film, drama and light entertainment.

“We thought it would be an interesting addition to the ESB People of the Year Awards to find out who, out of all our brightest stars, is the best of them all.”

The public can also nominate people for the other categories in the awards, including Irish Person of the Year, Young Irish Person of the Year, and International Person of the Year.

Past winners of the Person of the Year Award include John Hume, Mo Mowlam and Bob Geldof, and this year’s winners will be revealed at a televised ceremony on September 17.

:: Votes can be cast by logging on to www.peopleoftheyear.com for all categories, and by texting REHAB followed by the nominee’s name to 53500 for Ireland’s greatest living entertainer.
