IFA warns of sugar beet crisis
14/06/2005 - 08:26:53The Irish Farmers Association's national council is meeting in emergency session this morning to discuss what it believes is an impending crisis for sugar beet growers.
The IFA claims planned EU reforms will lead to dramatic cuts in beet prices and will put growers out of business.
Spokesman Jim O'Regan said previous EU reforms had left the various agriculture sectors with viable futures, but the latest moves would "wipe out" the Irish sugar industry.
